I sit, and I watch

Satyakam Ray

I sit and I watch
a pair of dogs standing
under the street light
playing and teasing
not missing mama’s sight

I sit and I watch
the moon at its peak
smiling down at us
cool breeze blowing hard
soothing us at no fuss

I sit and I watch
moonlight reaching backyard
not much distance from the street end
to a home of few yards
a garden closed by the gate end

I sit and I watch
mama dog howls the puppies
to join her going
under the moonlight to be happy
to so much soothing

I sit and I watch
the dog party go running
to the dreamland at fast
some ‘me-time’ under moon
for the family at last

I sit and I watch
the owner of the home arrives
with a big stick in time
few beaten up,few survive
seeking moonlight is crime

I sit and I watch
A labrador sleeping in its shed
lying close to the garden sight
enjoying the moon as day fades
barking street dogs at full might

I sit and I watch
mama dog only can howl
the puppies can bark and shout
moonlight free to all
but streetlight what they got

I sit and I watch
just sit and watch
under the moonlight
peeping at the streetlight!
